Macdonald West is a Certified General Contractor in the State of Florida since 1974 (License No: CGC 008042). He initially obtained his experience in construction from working, studying and qualifying as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and Project Manager in London, England. He was involved with several major civil engineerig projects with The Navy Works Department of The Admiralty before joining a private firm of Chartered Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers in London. Macdonald West emigrated to the United States in 1968 to attend Columbia University Graduate School of Business, NYC. He graduated with an MBA Degree in 1970. His construction and development work experience, along with studying to become a Certified General Contractor in the State of Florida, provided the practical and acedemic qualifications required for his License.
As Chief Operating Officer of The Allen Morris Construction Company from 1978 to 1988, Macdonald West was responsible for the Company's success and profitability in constructing office interiors and performing building renovations projects in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, Tallahassee and Jacksonville. The Company employed a workforce of superintendents, laborors, carpenters and high quality finished millworkers, in addition to the sub-contractors used to completed the projects. The Company earned a reputation for completing projects on time, within budget, and with a very high quality of workmanship.
Following Hurrican Andrew in 1992, Macdonald West formed The Construction Division of The Macdonald West Company. As General Contractor, the Company rebuilt numerous residential and commercial properties, seriously damaged by Hurricane.Andrew. All the projects were performed using a Cost Plus a Fee with a Guaranteed Maximum Price form of Contract. Every project was completed below the Guaranteed Maximum Price. As a result, there was no litigation from any clients following completion of these projects.
Macdonald West has supervised and overseen the construction work for all of the 30 plus projects he has developed in Florida. In 1996, he was elected President, The Builders Association of South Florida. In 1997, Mr. West was invited to serve on the Commercial, Construction and Real Estate Panels of the American Arbitration Association as an Industry Professional to hear and resolve disputes in these three areas.
